Time as a piece of art

A clock made of clocks: a hundred moving hands

Clocks in Motion is a kinetic clock that draws the current time with a grid of analog faces. Twenty-four little clocks turn their hands in unison — a living clock made of clocks for your iPhone, Mac, Apple TV and Android, as a screensaver, a widget, or the centrepiece of any idle screen.

01 · How it works

Every digit is drawn by clocks

There is no font and no seven-segment trickery. The numerals are assembled from real analog clock faces — the same mechanism that has told time for six centuries, choreographed to spell it out.

6

Clocks per digit

Each numeral is a three-by-two grid of faces. Straight edges, corners and curves are all built from hands pointing the right way.

2

Hands per face

Two hands share a pivot. Point them apart for a line, square them for a corner, or fold them together to leave the face blank.

A synchronised sweep

On the turn of every minute all forty-eight hands ease to their next position at once — the display's quiet, hypnotic heartbeat.

The concept

A digit consists of six analog clocks. Setting each clock to the necessary position forms a seven-segment display — the same principle behind the original ClockClock installation. Below: the positions for digits 0, 3, and 9.

Frequently asked

What is Clocks in Motion?

A kinetic clock app that tells the time with a grid of analog clock faces. Every digit is drawn by six small clocks whose hands rotate to form the current hour and minute — a clock made of clocks.

Does it show my real time?

Yes — it reads your device clock and shows your real local time, updating every minute. Switch between 12-hour and 24-hour format whenever you like.

Can I use it as a screensaver?

Absolutely. It's built to run idle — on a Mac, an Apple TV or an Android TV — and keeps the display awake so the clock never sleeps mid-sweep.

Which devices are supported?

iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Android phones and tablets, and Android TV and Chromecast. Home Screen widgets are included on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
